Persian Qum Rugs

With a variety of gorgeous designs that have been borrowed from other manufacturing centres in Iran, Qum rugs showcase the best of Persian style rugs with a Qum flair.

Rug production in the city of Qum, located in northwest central Iran, is relatively new. An asymmetrical Persian style knot is used. Most Qum rugs are crafted with a base made out of cotton, silk or a combination of both and a wool or silk pile. Higher quality rugs are crafted entirely out of silk. In some instances, the finer and softer wool of lambs or the underpart of the bellly is used, called kurk. Dyes in a range of colours are used, most comonly in warmer earth tones.

Though there is no dominant Qum design, distinctive Persian patterns featuring floral and leaf motifs are apparent. A border and a central medallion are also apparent. In some cases, the design may be a picture.

Qum rugs may be used as a floor covering or to adorn a wall.
