Persian Khorasan Rugs

The province of the rising sun, Khorasan, is located in the northeastern part of Iran. Khorasan is home to much of the rug production in the country and has been the main industry for centuries. It is believed that rug production began centuries ago, reaching its peak during the 1500s. It is still a thriving industry with over 140,000 weavers in the province alone. These weavers are spread out over the province in several cities located in the area, such as Birjand, Kashmar, Torbat jam and Torbat Headarieh, Niyshabour, Gonabad, Ghouchan, and Bojnoord. Some of the finest Khorasan rugs, known as Mood or Mud, come from the town of Mashad.

Khorasan rugs have a cotton base and wool pile. The wool of finer pieces is quite soft with a shimmer that highlights the beauty of the design. They are woven using traditional Turkish and Persian knots and feature intricate floral motifs or a fish pattern. They may also have a vase or paisley design.

Typical of most Persian rugs, colours such as red, blue, beige and brown are commonly used.
